What Saltwater Aquarium Light Fixtures are Best for Corals?
We specialize in saltwater aquarium reef lighting that is best for your coral and plant to thrive. The most popular and common systems include LED reef lighting, metal halide, T5 fluorescent and combo LED/T5 lights. If you have a fish only aquarium, you can implement any type of aquarium lights that meets your budget and desired needs . Fluorescent fixtures, i.e. T5 lighting, are typically the least expensive and will provide enough illumination to observe your fish. Realistically, any type of illumination for aquarium use will be be sufficient from either fluorescent or LED source for a FOWLR (Fish Only with Live Rock) system. However, if you have a living reef with plants and coral, it is essential that your saltwater aquarium lighting system will produce plenty of illumination for the plants and symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) found in live corals to photosynthesize.
Saltwater reef lighting will typically use aquarium light bulbs in the 10,000K (Kelvin) to the 20,000K color spectrum. Fish-only aquarium can use bulbs in the 6,700 Kelvin to 10,000 Kelvin spectrum range. These spectrums show off the pageant of beautiful colors of your aquatic life
There are typically two different types of saltwater aquarium lighting available for coral and plants: fully assembled units and DIY retrofit kits. A fully assembled reef light fixture is basically plug and play right out of the box. They will typically come with everything you need. (Always a good idea to check specifications before ordering). There are different ways to install these units. You can often mount the fixtures right on the rim or utilize a hanging system that will allow you to suspend the light right over your tank.
